Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine destelanmasıyla oluşan kesik polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız kalıntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit ast birimi çitndırır). Asliye ayrım peptitlerin kesik, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, özge amino asite mütemadi, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle destelanır. Polipeptid gestaltsına acımasızlan amino asitlerin her biri gestaltya peptid destelarıyla destelanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir kez çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, ortalama 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine acımasızlan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, azade amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin özge ucundaki azade α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
